A man is dead, another suffered injuries, and the driver is under arrest after a single-car crash on Detroit’s west side Tuesday morning, police said.

The crash took place about 2:15 a.m. in the area of Ewald Circle and San Juan when the 23-year-old driver of a Dodge Charger allegedly lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree, said Michael Woody, director of media relations for the Detroit Police Department.

Police believe the car was operating at a high rate of speed.

The front-seat passenger, whose age and identity are not yet known, “died almost instantly,” Woody said. A backseat passenger, 18, suffered facial injuries. The driver was unhurt.

Police made contact with the driver at the scene and arrested him for “reckless driving causing death,” Woody said.

Woody did not know if investigators believe drugs or alcohol to be a factor in the crash.
