2 federal research efforts in city getting nearly $50M
Detroit — Two federally-backed research efforts say they’re investing nearly $50 million over the next two years in a shared facility in Detroit.
Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow, or LIFT, and the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation announced the funding Friday, saying the money will support the acquisition and installation of new equipment as well as other upgrades.
The money includes LIFT’s $20.5 million and the institute’s $18 million.
The work is part of President Barack Obama’s National Network for Manufacturing Innovation initiative, now called Manufacturing USA.
The Detroit efforts focus on research in lightweight metals and advanced composites. The announcement was made as part of Manufacturing Day.
