A homicide victim found burned beyond recognition Sunday night died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.

The gender and identity remained unknown Monday afternoon.

“We have to wait until dental records come to get an ID," said Lloyd Jackson, spokesman for the medical examiner's office.

The burning body was discovered around 11 p.m. on the 8800 block of Moffat, north of East Warren and southeast of Gratiot, police said.

Firefighters extinguished the body, but what was left behind was “unrecognizable,” Officer Jennifer Moreno said.

Police said there was no further information available Monday afternoon about the investigation.
