A man in his 50s was fatally shot on Detroit’s west side Tuesday afternoon by a security guard who allegedly caught him in the act of stealing items from a construction site, police said.

The shooting took place just before 5 p.m. Tuesday on the 200 block of Merton, which is in the Palmer Park area north of McNichols and west of Woodward.

The man was allegedly stealing building materials from a construction site when the security guard, a 31-year-old woman, approached.

The man walked back to his car and the guard followed in an attempt to retrieve the stolen items, said Officer Nicole Kirkwood, a spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department.

As the man sat in the driver’s seat of his black Dodge Durango, the guard tried to remove the goods. But the man backed up to drive off while the guard was still partially inside the vehicle, Kirkwood said. At that point the guard pulled out a gun and fired, striking the man.

EMS transported the man to an area hospital, but he was dead on arrival.

Police are investigating the shooting, and have arrested the security guard. A warrant packet will be submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday for review, said DPD spokeswoman Kenyetta Hebron.
