Cops: Woman assaulted by man in ‘police’ baseball cap
A 37-year-old Detroit woman was sexually assaulted early Wednesday by a man she thought was a police officer, according to officials.
“She stated that he acted like a police officer, shined a flashlight in her eyes, and was wearing a baseball hat that said ‘police’ on it,” Officer Jennifer Moreno said of the 4:30 a.m. attack.
Police do not believe the man made any statements claiming to be an officer, Moreno added.
The woman got into the suspect’s black Jeep near Michigan and Proctor, according to police. He drove her to about two miles east to Scotten and Hancock.
“He sexually assaulted her,” Moreno said. “She was able to escape from the vehicle and he struck her with the vehicle.”
The woman fell down but was able to stand back up, at which point the suspect got out of the Jeep and began arguing with the victim. Witnesses called 911 and the suspect fled in his Jeep, southbound on Scotten, Moreno said.
The victim was hospitalized in temporary serious condition but expected to recover.
There is no indication the victim knew her attacker, described by police as a Hispanic male in his 30s who is around 5-foot-7 and 170 pounds.
The incident remains under investigation.
