Detroit PAL raises money to boost youth participation
Detroit — The Detroit Police Athletic League is starting a fundraising campaign to allow more youth access to sports and enrichment programs.
The One Thousand Kid Challenge will be kicked off Saturday at a youth summit in Ferndale.
Its goal is to raise $250,000 to support an additional 1,000 city youth in Detroit PAL programs. Organizers say each $250 raised will pay for one child’s participation.
Several former Detroit professional sports athletes have committed $30,000 toward the effort which runs through the end of December.
Detroit PAL Chief Executive Tim Richey says about 13,700 young people took part in programs last year.
Detroit PAL is a nonprofit that creates safe places for children and teens to play. It also trains and certifies volunteers to serve as coaches and mentors.
