A man is dead after running from the police on Detroit’s east side early Wednesday morning.

Hours after the fatal crash, some details remain unknown, including the man’s age, said Michael Woody, director of media relations for the Detroit Police Department.

Officers were dispatched on a call of a shooting in progress in the area of Gable and Charles, which is south of East McNichols and west of Mt. Elliott.

Upon arrival, officers saw a man that matched the description of the alleged shooter jump into a white, four-door sedan and flee at a high rate of speed. What became of that shooting was also unknown in the early hours after the crash.

A single police car gave chase but the man failed to stop, and after a pursuit just short of five miles, the white sedan crashed into a utility pole, tearing the car in half before it burst into flames.

The man died instantly.
