A Detroit man was fatally shot early Friday when three people knocked on his door and entered his home on the 17000 block of Ward, police said.

According to Michael Woody, director of media relations for the Detroit Police Department, the suspects then chased his wife through the house before she escaped out of a window and ran down the street for safety.

The suspects stayed behind and were observed removing marijuana plants from the house.

The incident happened at about 3 a.m.

Woody said the 60-year-old victim appeared to have a marijuana-grow operation inside the home.

His 46-year-old wife was unharmed.

The three suspects escaped in a gold or tan older model Mercury Grand Marquis.

One suspect is described as a black male in his 30s, five feet six inches tall, 170 pounds, with a goatee, wearing a black hoodie and black pants.

There was no description for the other three suspects.
