Detroit police have released video showing an armed robbery on the city’s north side that ended with the victim and suspect exchanging gunfire.

A surveillance camera captured a driver filling up his silver 2005 Chrysler outside a gas station in the 800 block of East Seven Mile at about 4 a.m. Nov. 12 when a man approaches with a gun.

Clad in a gray hooded sweatshirt and orange pants, the thief is seen pushing the 29-year-old driver against the car and forcing him to place his hands on it while searching the man’s pockets.

Finding no money, “the suspect then began to walk away from the victim with the victim’s wallet still in hand,” police said Friday.

Seconds later, the driver is seen opening his car door, leaning over and appearing to grab an object. At that point, investigators said, “there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the victim.”

The suspect is off-camera, but the motorist is seen ducking down, shutting his door, then sprinting toward the gas station.

That driver was not injured. It was unclear if any gunshots struck the suspect, who was last seen fleeing north on Omira in a Pontiac Grand Prix with two other men.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Detroit Police Department 11th Precinct Detective Unit at (313) 596-1140 or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
