A Detroit grandmother is being questioned by police Monday evening after a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot with a gun she left on her nightstand, police said.

“She was detained for additional questioning,” said Sgt. Michael Woody, spokesman for the Detroit Police Department. “She’s not currently under arrest yet, but that may change.”

According to police, the shooting occurred at 1:13 p.m. in the 4300 block of Tireman on the city’s west side.

Three teens, ages 13, 14 and 15, invited the victim to play games at the house, said Detroit Police Officer Nicole Kirkwood. Many school districts in the area had canceled classes Monday because of the snow.

The teens found the grandmother’s gun sitting on a nightstand, Kirkwood said.

“One of the boys — we’re not sure who — picked up the weapon and pointed it in the direction of the 13 year old,” she said.

While playing the gun discharged, hitting the victim, Kirkwood said.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police took the grandmother into custody. Kirkwood said she did not have additional information about the woman.
