Christmas 2016 got off to a gruesome start on Detroit’s southwest side, police said.

Firefighters responded to a blaze in a vacant apartment building on the 400 block of Livernois in southwest Detroit at 12:30 a.m. Sunday and discovered a body after the fire was extinguished.

Fire officials do not yet know the origin of the fire. All that’s known, in the early hours of the investigation, is that when the blaze was finally extinguished, firefighters discovered there’d been a dead body there the entire time.  Officials said the body is burned beyond recognition to the point the gender can't be determined.  officials don’t even know if the person was a man or woman.

The case is under investigation, said Officer Nicole Kirkwood, a Detroit Police Department spokeswoman.
