A 26-year-old store clerk on Detroit’s east side is safe after a would-be shopper allegedly decided he’d rather get the goods for free, police said.

The robbery occurred about 9:25 p.m. Tuesday at a Family Dollar store on the 4000 block of Conner, right near Mack.

A 26-year-old store clerk on Detroit’s east side is safe after a would-be shopper allegedly decided he’d rather get the goods for free, police said.

Police say the man, who is described as a black male, about 20 to 25 years old, 5 feet 5 inches tall, with a slim build and dark complexion, entered the store, grabbed items as if he were going to pay for them, and took everything to the counter.

Rather than pay, though, police say the man pulled out a weapon and demanded money from the register, a demand the store clerk complied with. The man then “escaped the scene in a waiting burgundy SUV, driven by a female,” a statement said. He was wearing a black baseball cap, a dark hoodie and green sweat pants at the time.

Detroit police are asking anyone with more information on the incident to share what they know at 313-596-5540.
