An unidentified driver is dead after a head-on crash with a Detroit Department of Transportation bus on the city’s east side Thursday morning, police confirmed.

The fatal crash took place about 6:30 a.m. in the area of Gratiot and Jane. All that’s known in the early stage of the investigation is that the crash took place and left the driver of the vehicle dead. He died at the scene, police said.

A driver is dead after his vehicle struck a Detroit Department of Transportation bus Thursday morning, police said.

Neither the driver of the bus nor the eight passengers who were on board reported any injuries, said Officer Dan Donakowski, a Detroit Police Department spokesman.

Suvon Treece, spokeswoman for the Detroit Department of Transportation, told The News via email that the crash happened on DDOT's Gratiot route, and that bus 1410 was the one involved in the crash.

The bus driver, Treece wrote, will be tested for drugs and alcohol and will need clearance from the city's doctor before returning to work.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, more than 1,000 people have died in car crashes in Michigan in 2016.
