Detroit — A 20-year-old man was taken into custody Thursday evening after a police pursuit that led to an exchange of gunfire on the city’s east side, police said.

The incident happened around 6:15 p.m. in the 14000 block of Hampshire, said Detroit Police officer Dan Donakowski.

Officers from the 9th precinct were pursuing a vehicle believed to be involved in an armed robbery. There may have been as many as four male suspects in the vehicle, Donakowski said.

The suspects got out of the car and one of the men fired shots at the officers, according to police. None of the officers were hit.

The officers returned fire, striking at least one of the suspects. They caught up with that suspect and took him into custody on the 14000 block of Camden.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for a gunshot to his left side. It is unclear if he was the suspect who fired at the officers, Donakowski said.

Police recovered the suspect weapon at the scene.

Police continue to look for at least three other suspects. No descriptions were available as of late Thursday evening.
