Crews repairing water main break near Eastern Market
Crews with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department are working to repair a water main break discovered during the weekend near Eastern Market.
One lane is closed to traffic at Gratiot and Russell as crews excavate to access a valve before they can repair a leak on the water main, said Bryan Peckinpaugh, a spokesman for DWSD.
“Crews are out there working as efficiently as possible,” he said.
Work is expected to be complete by the end of the week.
While the work area may give the appearance of a sinkhole, Peckinpaugh said that is not the case.
“Crews report that sometimes when we do a repair, the backfill will sink a little bit,” he said. “They go back and add more backfill. That happens pretty often when it’s cold, warm, cold, warm.”
Service has not been interrupted for businesses in the area, Peckinpaugh said. If an interruption is expected, businesses will be notified in advance.
