A man was arrested Friday after allegedly beating a relative to death on Detroit’s west side, police said.

The victim’s grandchildren called 911 after arriving at the home in the 7700 block of Bramell about 12:30 p.m. to report the 36-year-old man had assaulted her, said Officer Jennifer Moreno, a spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department.

Investigators learned a fight ensued when the 53-year-old woman tried to get the relative to leave the house, Moreno said. He then “struck her with a bat fashioned with spikes,” she said.

Arriving officers found the woman already dead from her injuries. They also described the male relative, who has not been named, as appearing to have mental issues, Moreno said.

The man remained in custody Friday night. It wasn’t clear when he could face charges in the incident.
