Dec. 12, 1979: First event at Joe Louis Arena, University of Michigan vs. University of Detroit in basketball.

Dec. 27, 1979: First Red Wings game, against St. Louis Blues.

Dec. 28, 1979: First college hockey, The Great Lakes Invitational.

Feb. 5, 1980: 32nd NHL All-Star Game, in front of then-record for NHL All-Star games 21,002.

April 27, 1984: Pistons lose the final game of the opening round of the NBA playoffs to Bernard King and the New York Knicks. The game was played at The Joe because of a scheduling conflict at The Silverdome. Isiah Thomas scored 16 points in the last 93 seconds to force overtime.

June 13, 1987: NHL Entry Draft held in the U.S. for the first time.

Aug. 18, 1989: The Joe hosts the first of four Arena Bowls, a 39-26 win for the Detroit Drive.

Jan. 6, 1994: The U.S. Figure Skating Championships. After practice at nearby Cobo Arena, Nancy Kerrigan had her knee whacked. The attack was traced to associates of rival U.S. skater Tonya Harding.

March 26, 1997: Red Wings settle the score with Claude Lemieux and the Colorado Avalanche in a massive melee involving nine fights.

June 7, 1997: Red Wings win their eighth Stanley Cup and first in 42 seasons with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

June 13, 2002: Red Wings win their 10th Stanley Cup with a 3-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Sept. 9, 2006: Mariah Carey concert at The Palace bumps decisive Game 5 of the WNBA Finals to The Joe. The Shock beat the Sacramento Monarchs, 80-75, to win title.

June 12, 2009: The last Stanley Cup Finals game hosted at The Joe. The Red Wings lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the first time a visiting team had won the Cup at The Joe.

March 3, 2016: The Horizon League men’s basketball tournament was held at The Joe for the first time. It would be played there again in 2017.

March 13, 2017: The last of many pro wrestling events, WWE Raw.

April 9, 2017: Last Red Wings game will be against the New Jersey Devils.
