Parade competition, memorial service mark Police Week

The Detroit News

Monday in Metro Detroit was a day for JROTC students and police cadets to show off their military drill skills and for current law enforcement personnel to honor colleagues who have given their lives while on duty.

At the Detroit Police Department’s 11th Precinct headquarters, cadets from the city police academy and students from the Chandler Park Academy JROTC program competed in parade marching exercises before a panel of judges.

At Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township, the U.S. Border Patrol’s Detroit Sector conducted an annual memorial ceremony in tribute to fallen officers.

Officers participated in a wreath-laying and heard remarks by Wayne State University police Chief Anthony Holt, who honored one of his own officers, Collin Rose, who died after he was shot Nov. 22 near the Detroit campus when he stopped to investigate a man riding a bicycle. No arrest has been made in his slaying.

Both of Monday’s events were conducted in honor of Police Week.
