Dogs maul 8-year-old boy at east Detroit home
An 8-year-old boy was mauled Tuesday by family dogs on the Detroit’s east side, police reported.
The youth had been home alone with his two siblings and three pets in the 4600 block of Bewick about 4:45 p.m. when some of the dogs “ended up attacking him,” said Officer Jennifer Moreno, a spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department. Investigators are working to determine whether all three were involved.
The siblings were able to pull the dogs, described as pit bulls, away from their brother and call 911 for help, Moreno said.
The boy was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Michigan. He was listed in stable condition late Tuesday.
Officers interviewed his mother when she returned home and took her into custody. She faces possible child neglect charges, Moreno said. Relatives are caring for her other children.
Animal control officers seized the three dogs, which were quarantined.
The incident came a week after several dogs mauled a 5-year-old girl at a home in the 6200 block of Holcomb. The child was critically injured and underwent surgery, police said.
