The woman was driving a gray Saturn, headed eastbound on Harper, which is west of Cadieux, when she tried to pass another vehicle on the right, said Dontae Freeman, social media manager for the Detroit Police Department. This was at about 2 a.m. Monday.

But the woman lost control and hit a light pole, which trapped the woman inside the Saturn for a time. Medics pulled her from the vehicle and transported her to an area hospital, but she died from her injuries.

As of May 16, the last time numbers were updated, some 338 people had died in car crashes in Michigan in 2017, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. That’s 26 fatalities above the 2016 pace, a year in which fatal crashes jumped by 10 percent.
