Police: Man fatally shot leaving closed collision shop

A 42-year-old man was fatally shot while leaving a closed collision shop on the city’s east side early Saturday morning.

The shooting took place about 5:45 a.m. Saturday on the 13000 block of Van Dyke, said Officer Dan Donakowski, a Detroit Police Department spokesman. That’s south of East McNichols and alongside Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Police believe the victim was leaving from a collision shop, which was not open at the time. Shots were heard fired in the area. Police arrived to find the man with a gunshot wound to his chest. The Wayne County Medical Examiner will determine his official cause of death.
