An argument at a soup kitchen on Detroit’s east side early Wednesday led to gunfire that left a 65-year-old man dead, city police said.

The victim sparred with someone at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in the 4000 block of Conner at about 9:26 a.m. before the suspect “stated he would be back and left the location,” investigators said in a statement.

The 65-year-old and a co-worker were leaving the building in a car when they spotted the suspect’s tan van approaching from behind, according to the release.

“Once the suspect caught up to the victim’s vehicle, in the area of Chandler Park and Conner, the suspect fired shots, striking the victim in the body, fatally wounding him,” police reported.

Other details, including a description of the suspect, have not been disclosed.

To spur tips from the public, authorities on Wednesday night released surveillance footage of the suspect’s van.

Anyone who recognizes it or has information related to the shooting is asked to call Detroit police homicide investigators at (313) 596-2260 or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
