Northbound Interstate 75 reopened shortly after 8:30 a.m. after commuters in southwest Detroit were delayed after an overturned semi caused authorities to close the northbound lanes around Springwells.

The semi apparently jackknifed under an overpass on the freeway Friday morning.

Though the left lane re-opened around 7 a.m., motorists were illegally exiting the Fort Street entrance ramp to northbound I-75, which is already closed due to construction on the Rouge River Bridge.

“It is during the morning rush hour, so it is the worst time,” Diane Cross, spokeswoman for Michigan Department of Transportation, said Friday morning. “The real issue is unfortunately drivers are exiting the entrance ramp from Fort Street, which potentially means they could hit someone head on. That is unbelievable that drivers would do that.

“It is not worth risking your life or someone else’s.”

Michigan State Police and Detroit Police were called in to assist.
