A 31-year-old woman was shot in the back as she ran from an attempted robbery early Thursday morning on Detroit's west side, police said.

The shooting took place about 12:22 a.m. on the 15000 block of Sussex, which is south of Fenkell and east of Greenfield.

Officer Dan Donakowski said the victim was standing outside a residence when a black male, of slim build, wearing a brown Carhartt jacket and black pants, approached and asked if she had any money.

The woman ran but was shot in her back. Medics transported her to an area hospital. An update on her condition was not immediately available.
