Police seek suspect in Detroit's first homicide in new year
Detroit's first homicide of 2018 happened minutes after midnight, prompting Detroit Police to seek the public's help in finding the suspect.
A 24-year-old man was shot multiple times Jan. 1 during an incident in the 800 block of East State Fair on the city's east side. The victim was in the rear driver's seat of a white Chevy Silverado when he was shot, police say.
Police say he was privately conveyed to the hospital and listed in critical condition but soon died from his injuries.
Police have not released a description of the suspect. Sgt. Nicole Kirkwood confirmed it was the first reported homicide of the new year, one of six shootings throughout the night.
In 2017, Detroit posted its lowest tally of criminal homicides in more than a half-century: 267.
