A 45-year-old man is in police custody after he pulled up next to his son's vehicle on the ramp of a Detroit freeway Friday morning and shot him, authorities said.

Michigan State Police are investigating the incident, which transpired at about 8:15 a.m. on the local ramp of eastbound Interstate 96 to the Southfield Freeway. Authorities said the shooting appeared to have stemmed from a family dispute.

Police allege that after shooting his 21-year-old son, the suspect drove away. He then turned himself in at the Detroit Police Department's 2nd Precinct near Grand River Avenue and Schaefer Highway, about five miles from where the shooting took place.

Officials said the son was transported to a local hospital and Detroit Police turned the investigation over to state authorities.
