Cops: Man steals Detroit police car
A 40-year-old man is in police custody after allegedly stealing a Detroit Police Department scout car, then having the car traced back to where he drove it, police said.
The theft took place Friday afternoon at 5:40 p.m. at the Old Grand Market on the 11100 block of Grand River. That's just north of Plymouth Road and west of Interstate 96.
Officers were stopping inside the market and had left the car running, unattended. They returned to find the vehicle gone.
Because Detroit police cars have GPS, they were able to trace the vehicle to the 16100 block of Gilchrist, which is a little more than four miles away, just north of Puritan and east of the Southfield Freeway.
Police arrived to find the suspect standing outside the scout car. They arrested the suspect without incident.
