Murder charges filed for man accused of shooting Detroit cop

Decharlos Brooks, the 43-year-old Detroit man charged last week in the shooting of Detroit police officer Glenn Doss now faces murder charges now that Doss has died, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Monday.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy will amend Brooks' charges to first-degree murder and murder of a police officer. He had been charged with one count of carrying a dangerous weapon, seven counts of resisting and obstructing, eight counts of assault with intent to murder, and 17 counts of felony firearm at his arraignment Saturday at 34th District Court in Romulus.

Brooks will be arraigned on the new charges at his probable cause conference on Feb. 6, Worthy's office said. 

Doss was among the officers responding to a 10:30 p.m. call Wednesday from someone believed to be Brooks in a domestic violence case at a home in the 5500 block of McDougall, near Interstate 94 and Chene Street.

When officers arrived, Brooks was outside of the home and allegedly began firing at them. Doss was a passenger in one of the patrol vehicles when he was struck in the head. He died Sunday at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Mayor Mike Duggan hailed him as "everything that was good about Detroit."

The Detroit Police Department announced on Twitter Monday that it would honor Doss with a vigil at his home precinct, the 7th precinct, at 3501 Chene, at 4:30 p.m.
