An animal welfare coalition’s weekend giveaway in Detroit has helped more than 600 pets, and another outreach effort is planned for Saturday.

PAWS in the D held a winter outreach program Saturday at New Welcome Missionary Baptist Church, where attendees received free food, straw, pet care educational materials and information on organizations that provide animal care to those in need, PAWS leaders said.

Over four hours, the event helped 278 pet owners, 642 dogs and puppies, and 124 cats and kittens, according to the group.

Pet owners have a chance to find the same kind of help from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ the King Catholic Church, 20800 Grand River.

The events are supported through Premier Pet Supply, Schettenhelm Farm, donors and volunteers.
