A puppy rescued after he was found wrapped in plastic and abandoned on Detroit's northwest side has died, Michigan Humane Society officials said on Saturday.

A passerby found the tiny canine with dark fur Friday on a sidewalk and alerted the Humane Society, the group said in a statement on its Facebook page. The humane society has increased its reward from $2,500 to $5,000 for tips leading to a suspect.

The person wrapped most of the dog, a three-month-old male German shepherd mix, said Anna Chrisman, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit. Chrisman said further information on where the puppy was found would not be released because of the ongoing investigation.

He was taken to the Michigan Humane Society Detroit center for medical treatment and the Society posted on their Facebook Saturday that the puppy did not make it through the night.

"Our team worked diligently to ensure he had the best possible care, and he passed away surrounded by caring staff at an emergency clinic around 4 a.m. Though he was only in our care for a short time, our team is happy he was able to experience love before crossing the rainbow bridge."

Anyone with information about this case should call 800-SPEAKUP.
