Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a 27-year-old Southfield man, Edjuan Jackson, with second-degree murder in connection to the Feb. 18 death of Xavier Dwan Pratcher, 61, on Eight Mile in Detroit.

Pratcher's death, at 8 Mile and Rosemont, was initially reported as the result of a hit-and-run, car-on-pedestrian crash. But authorities now believe there are two parts to what happened to Pratcher that morning: how he got in the roadway, and what happened once he was there.

Authorities believe Jackson struck and kicked Pratcher as he crossed West Eight Mile. Those hits caused Pratcher to lose consciousness in the roadway, at which point he was hit by an eastbound-traveling vehicle.

Police believe a black pickup hit Pratcher and kept heading east. They are still looking for the driver.

Jackson was arraigned Saturday at 34th District Court in Romulus, and was remanded to be held in Wayne County Jail as his case is tried. Jackson is due back in court on March 6 for a probable cause conference and on March 13 for a preliminary exam, both before Judge William McConico at Third Circuit Court.

Jackson is a probationer who is scheduled to remain under supervision by the Michigan Department of Corrections through May 2019, records show.
