A break-in at an apartment building on Detroit's west side was thwarted when a victim woke up and screamed, running the suspect off, police said.

The break-in took place about 1:28 a.m. on the 10000 block of Santa Maria, said Officer Holly Lowe, a Detroit Police Department spokeswoman. The area is north of McNichols and just west of West Outer Drive.

Three suspects attempted to enter the apartment and started by cutting out a screen window. At least one of them gained entry, but a woman inside the apartment saw him and screamed, and he left.

Police say the suspect is a black male about 30 years old, standing 5-foot-7, and bald. He wore a black jogging suit. Police are investigating.
