A 19-year-old Detroit man shot himself in his thigh while driving Saturday night on Detroit's west side and then tossed the gun, police say.

The accidental shooting took place about 10:39 p.m. Saturday on Fenkell near Appoline, south of the Lodge Freeway.

Police say the man was "pushing a handgun into his waistband" when the gun went off, and the bullet hit him in the thigh area. After being shot, police say, he tossed the weapon, somewhere between Meyers and West McNichols.

A friend transported the man to the hospital, where he was listed in temporary serious condition.
