The 24-year-old mother of two children left alone Tuesday morning in a motel room on Detroit's west side has been charged, officials said.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Michelle Penick with two counts of child abuse, second degree, after she allegedly left the children at 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The children were discovered in room 119 of the Cranbrook House Motel — south of Eight Mile on James Couzens, which is the service drive for the Lodge Freeway — after a 29-year-old man was shot in his back in the motel's parking lot.

One of the bullets went through a window at the motel, and when police arrived to investigate they found two children, a 1-year-old girl and a 7-month-old boy.

The children had not only been left alone, but their diapers were soiled. Tipsters responded with clues for police, but sometime in the afternoon the mother herself stepped forward and was arrested for neglect.

Police say both children have been placed with the father of the 1-year-old girl. He's not the father of the boy but said he will care for both, police said.

Police are still investigating the shooting.

Penick is expected to be arraigned at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in 36th district court in Detroit.
