A 40-year-old Detroit woman was sentenced to a lengthy prison term Thursday in a Wayne County courtroom for last year’s death of her newborn daughter.

Glencetta Gloster-Washington will spend 9-20 years behind bars for the death of her infant daughter. She was sentenced by Third Circuit Court Judge Lawrence Talon.

The child was found dead at the family’s home on Yorkshire in March 2017. Gloster-Washington was found competent in January to stand trial for the child’s death.

Gloster-Washington pleaded no contest to the second-degree murder last month. She had been with first-degree and felony murder charges as well as concealing the death of an individual. The woman has five other children and was a longtime employee of the U.S. Postal Service.

According to prosecutors, on March 26, 2017, family members discovered Gloster-Washington bleeding and unresponsive at the family home in the 3500 block of Yorkshire and took her to a local hospital.

Prosecutors say the woman had recently given birth and Detroit police officers were dispatched to the home where they discovered the remains of a newborn female in a garbage bag in a trash container outside the residence.
