Authorities say a driver is in critical condition after a possible freeway shooting near Hamtramck early Saturday.

At 5 a.m., Michigan State Police were asked by Detroit police to investigate a suspected shooting on Interstate 94 near Van Dyke.

State Police in a post on Twitter  said the driver and a passenger had left a bar and were traveling on I-94 at 2:30 a.m. when they "heard a pop and the driver felt pain."

The driver exited the freeway, the passenger then drove the victim to Detroit Receiving Hospital. The victim was listed in critical condition, according to MSP.

Eastbound I-94 at Mount Elliott was closed briefly Saturday morning while State Police detectives searched "to locate any evidence or if this shooting actually took place on the freeway." the agency said in another Twitter post.

"We do not believe this to be a random incident," MSP tweeted Saturday evening. "At this time we are working to establish the location of the incident as there was no evidence showing it occurred as reported to us."

The freeway has reopened.
