Detroit’s Belle Isle Conservancy is inviting the public to its second Koi Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The free event at Belle Isle Aquarium, 3 Inselruhe Avenue, offers visitors a chance to play traditional Japanese games, make origami fish and watch cultural performances, coordinators said.

The gathering is a holdover from the group’s koi transfer, which involved the community moving a collection of the Japanese carp to and from the Belle Isle Aquarium basement biannually because an outdoor lily pond couldn’t sustain the fish through the winter, coordinators said.

Fundraising at the annual Garden Party on Belle Isle made renovations of the pond possible last year, allowing the koi to stay outdoors throughout the year, the conservancy said.
