A "routine training exercise" involving the Detroit and Wayne State University police departments, federal officials, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police and local EMS services closed down roads in Midtown Detroit and will continue for a large stretch of the workday Thursday, Detroit police announced.

Road closures began at 7 a.m. and will last until about 3 p.m. Authorities asked the public to avoid certain parts of Midtown. The areas include West Warren between Cass and Anthony Wayne, and Second between West Hancock and West Warren.

Parking is also blocked off in the area, and vehicles that are still parked within the restricted area during the training exercise will be impounded.

Police warn that the sound of "simulated gunshots" will be heard and "a large presence of law enforcement...including tactical response vehicles" will be seen during the exercise.
