A 3-year-old boy was shot while inside a home in the 5900 block of Marcus on Detroit's east side on May 8, 2018.

A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after shooting himself in the stomach Tuesday morning inside his home on Detroit's east side — and his father is under arrest,  police said.

The shooting took place about 10 a.m. on the 5900 block of Marcus. That's north of Conant and west of Mt. Elliott.

Earlier Tuesday, Detroit Police Capt. Steve Walton said the boy’s family told detectives he was struck by a bullet fired into the house from the outside.

“It’s tragic,” Walton said. “There’s too much gunplay in the city.”

By the afternoon, the theory had changed: the child got a hold of his father's gun, pointed it at himself and pulled the trigger, police said.  The child is being treated at Children's Hospital and remains in critical condition.

Police searched the home and found a firearm and are testing it, according to Walton.

Walton said there were signs of bullet holes in the house’s exterior but it’s not clear if they are recent. Only the child and his parents were home at the time of the shooting, he said.
