A Detroit woman and her boyfriend were sentenced Wednesday to prison in connection with the accidental shooting death of the woman’s 3-year-old son late last year.

Kinesha Boyd, 20, will spend two years in prison under the Holmes Youth Trainee Act, youth offender program, for the shooting death of her young son Dec. 6 inside the couple’s apartment on the city’s east side.

Boyd’s 22-year-old boyfriend, Demetrius Lorenzo Peals, was sentenced by Judge Margaret Van Houten of Wayne County Circuit Court to up to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse. He will first serve a mandatory two years in prison for a felony firearms conviction.

The child, according to authorities, found a gun in the apartment in the 11000 block of Rossiter near Morgan and shot himself in the face. They alleged Boyd gave police misleading statements about the shooting.

Prosecutors say Peals left a loaded firearm accessible to the child, Kyrei, while the child was in his care.

Both Boyd and Peals pleaded guilty to their crimes last month.
