After 3-year-old shoots self, father charged
Melvin Cooley Cline III, a 34-year-old Detroit man, faces three felony charges after his 3-year-old son, Melvin Cooley Cline IV, shot himself Tuesday morning, with what authorities said was his father's gun.
Cline faces charges of second-degree child abuse, felony firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was arraigned Thursday afternoon in 36th District Court.
He is scheduled for a probable cause conference at 8:30 a.m. May 17 and a preliminary exam at 1:30 p.m. May 22, both before Judge William McConico.
It was 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, on the 5900 block of Marcus, that the younger Cline picked up a gun in the living room of his home and shot himself in the stomach, authorities said.
After being privately conveyed to Children's Hospital, the boy was listed in critical condition.
Per the statement from the prosecutor's office, "it is alleged that (Cline) left a loaded firearm accessible to his son whole in his care...it is further alleged that Cline failed to provide a safe environment for his son."
