A domestic violence incident that started with slaps and threats ended in a fatal stabbing early Sunday on Detroit's west side, police said.

The fatal stabbing took place about 1:05 a.m. on the 16000 block of Schaefer, which is just south of Puritan.

The victim is a 29-year-old man, the suspect's boyfriend, who was stabbed in his neck and chest. Medics transported him to a hospital, but he died.

The victim and the 35-year-old suspect had lived together for 12 years, the woman told police. They had an argument, during which the victim, who was said to be intoxicated, allegedly slapped his girlfriend "several times" and "told her he was going to kill her," according to Detroit Police.

The man armed himself with a knife, the suspect told police, and walked toward her with it. But he tripped and dropped the knife, which gave the woman an opening to pick it up. She did, and used it to stab the suspect multiple times.

Police have arrested the woman.
