Detroit — A man fired 14 rounds at another driver, striking him multiple times, in an altercation late Sunday night on a Detroit freeway, according to authorities.

The incident on westbound Interstate 94 near I-75 between the two men remains under investigation after the 33-year-old victim drove himself to Henry Ford Hospital. He was in critical condition at last report.

The 34-year-old suspect drove himself home and told his family what he had done. A family member escorted him as he turned himself in to the Detroit Police Department. Michigan State Police took him into custody from there, along with the gun he allegedly fired and the vehicle he drove.

Police have processed both vehicles, collected evidence from the scene and interviewed witnesses.

I-94 at I-75 was closed overnight Monday, as were the southbound and northbound I-75 ramps to westbound I-94, Michigan State Police said.

The Michigan Department of Transportation Southeast Michigan Transportation Operations Center issued alerts about the road and ramp closures at 11:27 p.m. Sunday. The freeway was open again by 2 a.m. Monday.
