Local lanes on eastbound Interstate 96 have reopened at Outer Drive after a fatal crash during rush hour Tuesday.

The Michigan Department of Transportation tweeted at about 11 p.m. that the crash, near the Evergreen exit, had been cleared.

"The crash turned into a fatal car fire," said Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw. "The scene is beginning to cool off and we can start getting in there to find out what happened."

The driver of a utility truck failed to stop and struck an unidentified passenger car at 5 p.m., according to Michigan State Police. The two vehicles rear ended an Oldsmobile passenger vehicle, forcing it into a Nissan car. The truck and Oldsmobile caught fire, police said.

"The driver of the utility truck was able to get out of his vehicle," MSP tweeted. "The driver of the unknown vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene. There were non-life threatening injuries to the other vehicles occupants."

The victim has not been identified.
