A 30-year-old woman was found dead Tuesday after a domestic assault in a Detroit hotel room, police said.

The incident occurred at 8 a.m. at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel on Third and Bagley Avenue, where police were dispatched on calls of a disturbance.

Upon arrival, police spoke with a 33-year-old man who claimed he had harmed his girlfriend. He led them to the scene, where she was found unresponsive.

Medics pronounced the woman dead there.

Police have the man in custody, Assistant Chief James White said during a press conference Tuesday.

"A very tragic domestic situation," he said. "The good news is that the perpetrator is in custody. We have not released any information on the victim to give respect to the family."

White said the investigation is ongoing.

The incident followed a deadly holiday weekend where eight people were fatally shot in Detroit, 14 nonfatally shot and one man died of blunt-force trauma injuries.
