Grandmother charged in boy's drug overdose death
A 59-year-old Detroit woman was charged Friday in connection with the overdose death of her 8-year-old grandson.
Gail Townsend-Finley was arraigned in 36th District Court on one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of second-degree child abuse after her grandson Jamere Arnold was found dead by medics last year.
Detroit Fire Department medics on July 5, 2017, were dispatched to a home in the 19900 block of Conley Street on Detroit's east side after receiving a 911 call about a child who wasn't breathing. Medics arrived and found Jamere unresponsive, authorities said.
"The medics transported the child to a local hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead on arrival," Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Maria Miller said in a statement. "t was determined that the child died from fatal ingestion of Fentanyl at the residence.
"It is alleged that the defendant left drugs accessible to her grandson, which resulted in Jamere’s death," Miller said. "It is also alleged that the defendant failed to provide a safe environment for her grandson."
Townsend-Finley was given a $50,000/10 percent bond.
