Man in MGM Grand killing to get mental exam
A St. Clair Shores man charged in the death of his girlfriend at a Detroit hotel will undergo competency exams after police said he stabbed her and bit her nose.
Daniel S. Michalak, 33, was arraigned on charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to maim and assault with intent to do great bodily harm in connection with the death of his girlfriend Tia Marie Vellucci, 27, of Davison.
At a probable cause hearing Wednesday, Michalak was referred to the forensic center for competency and criminal responsibility evaluations, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
The incident occurred at 12:49 p.m. on May 29 at MGM Grand Casino Hotel, when Detroit police officers received information that led them to check hotel room 408. Upon arrival, Detroit police said Michalak led them to his girlfriend.
Police found Vellucci lying on the floor with multiple stab wounds and a bite wound to her nose, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. Michalak was arrested at the scene.
The case remains under investigation awaiting the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s report and other forensic testing.
The next court date is scheduled for Sept. 6 before Judge William McConico.
