Police: Pedestrian struck, killed while crossing Gratiot
A man who was walking across Gratiot Avenue in Detroit Monday morning is dead and the man accused of driving the car that hit him is cooperating with police, authorities say.
The victim, whom police have not identified, was walking across Gratiot at Dubois when a driver headed east on Gratiot tried to avoid him but struck him, Detroit police spokesman Dontae Freeman said.
The 37-year-old driver called 911 and medics arrived to transport the victim to an area hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Michigan Department of Transportation said last Tuesday that 336 people had died in car crashes in Michigan in 2018, down 65 from the same time a year ago.
