Getting downtown on Interstate 94 from the east side will be challenging this weekend.

Michigan Department of Transportation officials said Tuesday crews plan to close I-94 between Conner Avenue and Interstate 75 at 9 p.m. Friday to conduct work on the Gratiot Avenue overpass.

Crews will set the bridge's beams over the freeway and perform foundation work at the Chene Street overpass.

I-94 will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, officials said.

During the closure, all ramps along east and west I-94 will be closed.

Westbound I-94 will have one lane open to Conner for local access.

Eastbound I-94 traffic will be rerouted north on I-75 to eastbound Eight Mile Road and back to eastbound I-94. Meanwhile, westbound I-94 traffic will be rerouted to westbound Eight Mile to southbound I-75 and back to westbound I-94.

The work comes as westbound Interstate 696 between I-94 in Macomb County and I-75 in Oakland County is closed for a $90 million overhaul
