Police: Man killed, 2 children shot by 'coward'
A citywide manhunt is under way for a man or men who opened fire on Detroit's east side Wednesday morning, killing one man and injuring two children.
Police Chief James Craig said a 34-year-old motorist was targeted by someone who fired 12 .223-caliber rounds, killing the intended victim while injuring a 10-year-old girl who was shot in the shoulder; and a 14-year-old boy who was apparently cut by glass, the chief said.
"This is deplorable," Craig said of the shooting, which happened about 7:40 a.m. on the 11000 block of Sanford near Coleman A. Young International Airport.
"It was a targeted attack," Craig said. "A coward fired a high-powered rifle at his intended target, and innocent children are hurt. It's these kinds of incidents that make people who live and work here feel unsafe."
Both children were expected to recover from their injuries, Craig said, adding the motive for the shooting is unclear. "We're still talking to the community, trying to get answers," he said.
Commander Eric Decker of the 9th Precinct said there is "limited information" about the shooter or shooters.
"The little girl in the car said she saw two black males wearing dark clothing carrying handguns," Decker said. "It's possible they were .223-caliber pistol-grip AR-15 style guns. We don't see those very often, but it's possible.
"It only looked like one set of casings at the scene, but we're keeping all possibilities open," Decker said. "Our Homicide Task Force is trying to pull nearby video, but right now we don't have much of a description."
A 12-year-old boy was also in the van, but was not hurt, Decker said.
The children’s mother transported them to Children’s Hospital in the van, and their conditions are not immediately available.
There were “at least 12” .223-caliber shell casings at the scene, Decker said, all within 12 to 15 feet of the slain victim..
“It’s an extremely sad day,” Decker said. “What we need is the community to come forward” to put names and faces to a very vague description of the shooters: two men in dark clothing, carrying guns.
Investigators looking into and out of houses on the block for working video cameras and footage. Some footage has been recovered, Decker said, but it only shows “the instant” of the shooting, but not the suspects.
